Treason

Most can (and did at the time) understand that the Bush administration had to take strong measures in response to the terrorist attacks of 911. We complained some, but not too much, about what we then had to go through at the nation’s airports. We in general supported the overthrow of the Taliban in Afghanistan, and few raised any serious objections to the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security. While most know that Bush is an arrogant idiot, we gave him the benefit of the doubt, and his approval rating went stratospheric as the US started to kick ass and take names.

Tragically, demonic forces jumped into the fray with both feet and no shortage of enthusiasm. The attack gave the PNAC boys the Pearl Harbor event they wanted as an excuse to take over the world by any and all means necessary. The Bush brain was already planning to invade Iraq and loaded with code:

IF terrorEvent THEN invadeIraq;

The critical distinction is that between the above and the two lines:

IF terrorEvent THEN investigateCause;
IF investigateCause (terrorEvent) = Iraq THEN invadeIraq;

The PNAC boys had no problem generating enthusiastic support among a salivating army of war profiteers. Unfortunately, still hurting from Vietnam, most in America weren’t so enthusiastic about an unjustified, optional war at tremendous expense not to mention loss of American life. PNAC had its event, but it needed to demonstrate that Iraq belonged in the set of responses. Quickly, it was seen as necessary to collect the information sufficient for a case to invade Iraq.

Without listing all of the details, we now stand on the brink of uncovering not only the monster that the administration invoked, but the dark magic and incantations used to summon it from Satan’s empire. The reader likely grasps this monster’s respect for the rule of law, the Constitution, our troops, our economy, our reputation, our safety, our future.

Should any experienced generals (Shinseki) bring up reality in terms of the occupation, fire them. Should any of the finance people (O'Neill) bring up reality about the cost, fire them. Should sources of information fail to provide the desired data, torture them. Should the desired results remain unavailable, fabricate data and lie to everyone. The lead in a New York Times piece today:

The Central Intelligence Agency withheld information about a secret counterterrorism program from Congress for eight years on direct orders from former Vice President Dick Cheney, the agency’s director, Leon E. Panetta, has told the Senate and House intelligence committees, two people with direct knowledge of the matter said Saturday.

Imagine my surprise. We knew these demons were guilty of treason years ago. Now the proof is coming out.

I hope this leads to the complete disintegration of the Republican party. Run, Sarah, run!!

Yeah, this will go on forever as the real investigative journalists and later the historians look under every stone and piece together the horrible truth.

Speaking of Sarah, Frank Rich really nailed her in his NYT op-ed today. She Broke the GOP and Now She Owns It.

When Rich is good, he is really, really good. I tend to agree with him that Sarah is the GOP's only star, and she isn't going away. She'll make a lot of money, and gain nothing for them, but people will look at pictures of her. No question about that.

She'll continue to be a national joke outside of her "base," but she'll have her bank statements to keep her warm.

The "other side" will say the program was not actually implemented, or wasn't a big deal, but if that's the case, why would Cheney deliberately instruct the CIA to keep it a secret? It is HUGE that Cheney specifically identified the program and ordered the agency to withhold its existence from the intelligence committee.

Further, if it's no big deal, why did Panetta stop it immediately?

Ordering the CIA to run secret programs without telling Congress makes Watergate look like sneaking a six pack from Circle K.

This is TREASON.

Actually, Palin's biggest asset might just be her lack of experience.

She is one of the few nationally prominent Republicans who can plausibly claim that she had nothing to do with Bush/Cheney. Ever Republican in Congress supported their agenda, and a lot of long time state governors (remember Palin took office at the beginning of 2007) had to go along with their homeland security garbage like working towards a national ID card.

Depending on what comes out from this, even the smallest link to Bush/Cheney might be politically poisonous.

This is nothing but the politicization of national security. As convenient the Dems just release another Bush/Cheney bombshell to steer the news away from the current direction, in this case Obama's slipping approval.

The CIA is not required to inform Congress of every single little project or idea it develops.

This is politics more than treason.

While at the aggregate level it may be the case that Bush and Cheney are guilty of treason, this program is not the smoking gun.

I think this particular instance is more a reflection of incompetence than treason. At the end of it all, when history finally sorts it all out, Bush is going to go down as arrogant and utterly incompetent.

It was the dope show.

The program most likely was one to get the bad guys, i.e. assassination, and the A word made Cheney get all cloak and dagger. In all likelihood, the CIA could have briefed the intelligence committee, "We have such and such efforts underway..." A competent administration wouldn't have been so paranoid.

That's what history will ultimate say about Cheney. He is paranoid to the point of psychosis, a truly f'd up creature.

The Republicans are in serious, serious trouble. Their system has all but precluded worthy candidates. They richly deserve Sarah Palin. She is a perfect representation of what their party has become. Run, Sarah, run.

Well, Nav, talk about being spot on.

We now know it was all about assassination. I'm not qualified to address what might be problematic about briefing the gang of eight. My sense is that after 911 Congress would have been okay with a small set of surgically precise squads.

I could not agree more with your entire post, Nav. Sarah Palin IS PERFECT for the GOP. They richly deserve each other.

I would say that we don't know it is all about assassination. The information so far is incomplete and contradictory.

It was important enough for Cheney to be all over it, but not important enough for top people to tell Panetta about it for 4 months. It was important enough for Panetta to take IMMEDIATE action yet it was "not operational." What? There is more to this story.

The Bush library (what irony) should feature all empty shelves and password locked computers with notes posted, "All information has been classified."

What they are trying to hide is their incompetence. Sarah Palin is the next step after Bush in the devolution towards the ultimate blend of total incapacity with a Messiah complex. Two years ago, I would have insisted it was impossible to surpass Bush in simultaneous arrogance and ineptitude.

Wrong. Isn't she just incredible?

Colin Powell's former Chief of Staff confirmed that it was about assassinations.

I agree with Navigator. Something doesn't make sense. Assassinations may be part of it, but there is more to the story.

Bush started talking about "capturing and killing" terrorists ever since the attacks, with the support of everyone, and now a program to "capture and kill" terrorists is super secret and needs to be kept from Congress?

What?

Why did Panetta shut it down immediately? Does anyone think he went all out to pull the plug and at once come clean with Congress over a program to "kill terrorists"?

That is simply not feasible. Underneath this hood is something ugly.

I agree that it does not make any sense. And Cheney staying in Washington overtime...I wish there is a really desire to go all the way with the investigation, but I doubt it will happen.

The Bush administration had the following policy for handling things.

If it was political, it went to Karl Rove.

If it was important, it went to Dick Cheney.

If it was ridiculously easy, it went to the dumb fuck.

Cheney had free reign. The apparatus for "capturing and killing" probably morphed into an outfit ready to do anything Cheney wanted in complete secrecy. It is entirely possible that we will learn about all sorts of Rambo bullshit that went on without proper diligence, with the wrong people getting killed, etc..

As always, Cheney could also have used the program to funnel huge amounts of money to ANYONE.

Incompetence.

They went after not just terrorists, but suspected supporters of terrorists.

And they killed the wrong people. The stupidity and botched hits are coming out.

Incompetence. The Republicans are the party of obese know nothing uneducated incapable adulterous corrupt lying racist misogynist whore mongering WHITE MALE assholes.

But they do like a WHITE FEMALE piece of shit scum that sings their tune, the corrupt self loving goddess from Alaska. Run, Sarah, run.

Don't hold back, Anon. I surmise you have been paying a little too much attention to the Sotomayor hearings, and yes, they are painful.

I can't watch them. In fact, I can't even watch clips of the GOP Senators and their nauseating questions. Sessions is a knuckle dragging disgrace.
