Shoot an Undergraduate for Jesus

Tucson, Arizona. Arizona lawmakers Karen Johnson and Russell Pearce have to be among the stupidest knuckle dragging Neanderthal nimrods the GOP ever elected to office. Sure enough, today's AZ Star has a piece discussing their proposal for a bill to allow faculty and students to carry guns on college campuses. The University of Arizona bans the possession of firearms (and alcohol) on campus, and for good reason.

Of course the kids drink beer despite the signs on campus that suggest most don't. Teenagers will be teenagers, and as with sexuality, drugs, driving, and other matters, the most effective solution is EDUCATE, EDUCATE, EDUCATE, and I mean teaching reality, not absurd concepts like abstinence. Our governor wisely rejected funds for those embarrassingly inane, ineffective programs.

The University of Arizona is a gun free zone and should be. The instant a firearm is sighted on campus, heads will turn immediately and people will call security. A gun on campus immediately indicates a problem. We cannot stop the concealed weapons and insane psychopaths, but we can establish a culture where possession of firearms on campus is flat out unacceptable. The reader can visit the article for the ludicrous language on why allowing guns on campus is a good idea. I'm wondering why we apparently have a law that bans brains from Mesa. People actually voted for these clowns.

The bill will not pass. Hopefully our distinguished university presidents and the Arizona Board of Regents will contact whatever scraps of intelligence can be found in our state legislature and insure this atrocity never sees the light of day.

While they are allowing guns on campus, why not go whole hog and allow alcohol too? In fact, build a liquor store and a bar in the student union. Then Randy Graf can suggest we let the students take their guns into the bars.

I thought this was a really bad idea at first Matt. I thought, WTF...Pearce again...

but maybe he has a point...

Given the enormous budget cuts we are about to get hit with by him and his posse, I am thinking I might need a gun to:

a) Stem the riot...

b) Protect myself from being trampled as faculty and students leave.

c) End it all fast vs. the slow death that our universities are facing.

This story made me sick when I saw it this morning. Karen Johnson is such a knee-jerk John Birch Society idiot. Mesa ought to be a hazardous-waste dumping ground...That whole area is scary for electing someone like her.

Johnson and Pearce are idiots.

There is a way to universalize an armed population. They do it in Switzerland and Israel. The entire population is educated and trained in firearms and the use of firearms. It is a cultural requirement for both genders.

The United States would never fund what it would take to implement it.

It won't pass. Dr. Shelton and others will directly or indirectly secure the votes for its defeat.

Actually, in Switzerland everyone has guns, but no one has bullets. You see the Swiss with their guns in public all the time, going to their units (like the National Guard) for training, but only at the training stations are they given any bullets.

If you are caught having bullets you shouldn't have in Switzerland, you go away for a long time.

Russel Pearce sponsoring an idiotic bill is not news. The fact that Paula Aboud sees no problem with arming teachers is SHOCKING news.

I am calling on her offer a full explanation. Short of some earth-shattering revelation from Paula, I think that she needs to go.

Not to interrupt your hysteria, but has there ever been a documented case of someone in Arizona with a concealed carry permit randomly shooting and killing someone in a school or any other public place for that matter?

How about those statistics nationwide?

I don't know, before we go about throttling the bill of rights, we might want to look those things up.

I'm not sure that this bill is something I would vote for, but you are certainly being kneejerk just a little. A very solid argument could be made that Virgina Tech may have turned out differently had it not been a gun free zone. Your argument has very little basis in reality and is gun-fearing hyperbole as far as I can tell.

I would be very interested in those concealed carry statistics. What do you think?

And remember, I love you, x4mr.

And Roger, you owe AZAce an apology:

He was spot on.

Framer,

The feeling's mutual, and I am not the least bit against an individual's right to bear arms.

A college campus is a place where people learn and aspire. There is no reason to introduce firearms into the environment.

The only guns that belong on campus are those carried by screened and employed security officials responsible for protecting faculty and students. No one else has any business bringing a firearm on campus.

Who needs a gun in a classroom?

Who needs a gun in a classroom?

People who are attacked by maniacs for starters, which is happening with more and more frequently. Again, banning concealed carry permit holders from bringing guns to campus has not, nor is it likely to save one life. The opposite can plausibly be true, however.

Even back to the Texas Clock Tower Shooting, much of Whitman's killing spree was limited as he was pinned down from fire not only from police, but from private citizens with guns on campus.

I'm not saying that we should turn campus into tombstone circa 1880, but allowing screened and licensed CC permit holders to have guns on campus shouldn't be dismissed without discussion.

If you want to put laws into effect to help stop these shootings, a good start would be to stop glorifying these monsters in the media. Its ironic that something that would actually help is rejected on account of the Bill of Rights, but a "solution" that would do absolutely nothing to solve the issue (and could possibly make it worse) is not held to the same scrutiny.

Hmmmm ... I don't know about shot, but I did have a gun pointed at me, on campus, by an individual with a concealed carry permit when I was in school there.

He was inebriated at the time.

Framer,
We'll have to agree to disagree. Philosophically I actually don't have a problem with proper permits anywhere. Philosophically.

My concerns involve the actual consequences of the day to day implementation. Most of the students are not even 21. They are not experienced drinkers. Sexual tension is at fever pitch.

Yes, your language is intelligent and guarded, and if people want to a long discussion up in Phoenix, fine, but I'm ready to dismiss this as a lousy idea. I stand by the assertion that we come out net ahead if we keep the guns out.

Sirocco,

How many times do I have to apologize for that. Way to hold a grudge :)

Some of you miss the point. THis proposed law would allow guns on ALL school campuses (K-12) not just college.

Imagine if the assistant principal at Rincon had been carrying a gun last week. When she fell and got knocked out, there could have been a gun right there for the taking.

And opposing this law does not trample on the 2nd Amendment. It is currently illegal to carry a gun, outside of law enforcement, on a school campus.

AZW88:

Holy $#%#$!! The bill includes K-12?!

WTF?!!!!

Thanks for posting that information.

Framer has amply demonstrated his intellect on the blogs over the past year and a half, but guns and schools don't mix. If it really becomes necessary, paid (and trained) security personnel are the way to protect students.

When one considers the quantity of schools and students, the psychopathic shoot ups are quite rare.
