Distilled Insanity

Not sure how many have heard of the Westboro "Baptist" Church headed by the lunatic Fred Phelps, who for reasons quite unclear has decided that homosexuality is the demon behind all evil on the planet. Forget about greed, envy, pride, sloth, gluttony, or anything else. The root of all evil is a sexual encounter with another of the same gender. That's the reason we're in Iraq. That's why gangs guard turf and drug wars shed blood on our streets. Homosexuality is the root of all evil, the cause of global warming, the health care crisis, poverty, hunger, genocide, racism, the plight of women in developing countries, domestic violence, drug addiction and alcoholism, extortion and organized crime, corruption, traffic congestion, and bad television programs. That's why our national debt is pushing $10T. Were it not for men touching other men and women touching other women, there would be no war, no famine, no crime.

Turkey, Iraq and Iran would peacefully concede territory to create Kurdistan, and Spain and France would grant the Basque people the turf for their own sovereign nation. God would love us and solve all our problems. Vladimir Putin and Russia would ignore hundreds of years of history and culture and embrace democracy and separation of powers, and the United States would not put a vegetable in the White House.

Can anyone shed light on this madness? Biology is biology. 4% of men and 2% of women are born with a sexual attraction to the same gender. They did not choose it any more than heterosexuals choose. Did you choose? What pathology causes an individual to develop an obsessive, compulsive, life consuming hatred towards a particular group? I can grasp the primitive mind experiencing initial fear of another race upon the first encounter, a simple fear of the unknown. Their skin color is different. What does that mean? Well, find out.

I acknowledge that if a silver craft lands in my backyard and gray creatures with big black eyes approach, I'll be nervous, but in the absence of data, I won't shoot first. If they are evil conquerers out to kill us all, and I am first, I'm toast.

What is it with Phelps living a life utterly consumed by hatred? He has organized his entire being around the hatred of homosexuality. Why? I will assume the reader has heard of the outrageous protests. Well, the family of Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, a soldier killed in Iraq whose funeral was disrupted by these nuts decided to contact attorneys and sue these quacks. They won.

Somehow I don't think God hates. Fine with me, however, if the Almighty can kick serious ass when a serious ass-kicking is entirely appropriate.

"These people" see only 2 evils -- homosexuality and abortion.
Forget about hunger, homelessness, war, female circumcision.
They are sick.
God help THEM!!!

I'm basically an atheist, thank god. What with so manny 'Christians' spewing hate for other humans.
However, should there turn out to be a God of love, who created the human race and every person in it,(and every other thing in the universe), and we all get to stand before him and account for our lives, I want to be standing in line to hear one of these complete idiots explain to GOD that he made a mistake when he created gay men and women. I'll be laughing for at least half of enternity in hell.

SL and Anon,

Most well said. If God had such a problem with homosexuality, why did she set the genetic probabilities to produce 1 out of 50 women as lesbians and 2 out of 50 men as gay? Why did God create more than one race?

I am too old, I think, to see these issues put to rest, but I think my daughter will. Only the most idiotic (cerebral HP of a dead cockroach) of those under 30 regard sexual preference as more significant than the preference of ice cream flavor.

I do believe in God, and I think she's pissed and ready to kick some ass.

I do not believe that I have the mental capacity to understand a person who claims to believe in God and stands outside of a funeral with sings that read America is doomed, god hates fags and have children of all people holding these signs. Fred Phelps is a dieing breed. I would like to see how Fred would react if a group of people were to stand outside of his son or daughters funeral holding signs reading Thank God your Son is dead one less fundamentalist. I too would like to hear one of these people explain how God in his infinite wisdom some how screwed up in creating homosexuals. Better yet we should be asking them, where did God go wrong when he brought these people into the world. I am sorry if there is one thing in this country that could one day spell the end of first ammendment rights its people like Fred Phelps.

You people wouldn't have to right to say or do these idiotic things if it wasn't for the Military. We are out there protecting your right to be morons. I understand ya'll think we shouldn't be over there. Yet, to turn around and say thanks for dieing. Having them pay only 10.9 million? These people should be treated as terrorist. Take these people to a camp and beat the hell out of them everyday. What happens when you allow incest in your family, you get these brain dead people!

a controversial church, considered by many to be a hate group and a cult, headed by Fred Phelps, and based in Topeka, Kansas, U.S.. It runs the websites GodHatesFags.com,[1] GodHatesAmerica.com and others expressing condemnation of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender people (LGBT), Roman Catholics, Muslims and Jews, as well as populations it considers to support the forementioned groups, including Swedes, Canadians, Irish and Americans. SOUNDS LIKE THEY'RE NAZI'S TO ME.

How, is this protected speech in the first place? The courts have consistently said there are reasonable limits on free speech. It would seem to me that the 1st amendment does not give you the right to engage in what is effectively harassment.

Somehow, this guys right to have a private and and peaceful funeral for his son is trumped by these buffoons right to be cruel, disruptive and certifiably nutty within earshot of everyone at said funeral.

Thats right, a perfectly understandable, universal, and human right to a funeral takes a backseat to somebodies right to bellow horseshit that everyone except them find to be completely unintelligible, boorish and downright mean.

This is not protected speech. Also, that hillbilly pastor who leads those clowns looks like the biggest closet-case.

If as these nuts say "America is doomed" because of homosexuals, why don't they go to Iran, where its nut case of a president says there are none?

something is not right about this
story, the first thing that smells funny is that christians dont normaly use the word fag. more like the words gays,homosexuals,ect...which leads me to believe that this whole story is a fake, its war protesters disguised as christians, because if anyone can remember its antiwar protesters that have been crashing funerals since the war began,so be careful with this story' it looks political, and if its lagit those people are not true christians.

encroaching on a personal, solemn ceremony for a greiving family to grind whatever axe you have is abhorrent. I have heard of these folks before, and even visited the website. Unbeleivable. Go away, and hate in the privacy of your home. The worst part is the indoctrination of their children, creating a whole new generation of assholes.

anon, it's legit, whatever they may be, they are claiming to be christians. I think everyone here understands that the majority of christian faith does not behave in this way. It seems like you can't resist pinning it on folks who are against the war. These guys are in a class of their own, and are not even a part of the pro/against war discussion.

Also, please qualify your assertion that "its antiwar protesters that have been crashing funerals since the war began"

Hate the sin but love the sinner. That is what a Christian should be doing. Phelps does not follow his Bible. What is not of God is of the Devil. What Phelps is doing is definitly not of God. His evil shows through for all to see....and he's proud of it!

These people are not true Christians. They are the fringe element that gives Christians a bad name. Why they are allowed to continue to protest I truly do not understand. I'm sorry, it's not free speech, it is harassment! As for a monetary settlement against them, it does nothing. Where are they going to get money when they spend all their time traveling around looking for more funerals? Bar them from coming near a funeral, then something at least something close to justice will be done. I personally prefer prison for them.

I grew up in Kansas and I still remember the first time I saw Phelps and his followers protesting against gays. It sickened me 20 years ago as much as it does today. These people are NOT Christians and give all good Christians a bad name. Which would explain why they are all related. No normal, sane person would join in their madness. I attended the funeral of a family friend who was killed in action in Afghanistan last year and, of course, the Phelps clan was there. As disturbing as it was to see them protesting, it paled in comparison to those who came to pay their respects. The streets of a small town in Kansas were lined with hundreds of people holding American flags to show support for a fallen hero. When I look back on that day, I remember the amazing support and patriotism and the crazy protesters are nothing but a joke.

We all agree that this cult is an evil abomination on our country, but what precedent does this set for the future? Listen to what a few of you have said:

"These people should be treated as terrorists"
"The courts have consistently said there are reasonable limits on free speech. It would seem to me that the 1st amendment does not give you the right to engage in what is effectively harassment."
"I personally prefer prison for them."

Who gets to decide what "reasonable limits" are?? Who decides what constitutes "harassment"?? We should have a right to say whatever we want to say as long as it doesn't directly endanger anyone. You shouldn't be allowed to yell "Fire!" in a crowded theater, but it should be legal to yell "Homosexuals will burn in hell!" (though they should expect to get thrown out of the place and get a beating). When you start jailing people for offending you, you open the door for the criminalization of all kinds of radical thought. These people are evil, but they were on public property, following every ordinance, and not physically hurting anyone. Military funerals can be held in private places, these people can be crowded out by counter-protesters, and people should certainly be protesting THEM wherever they go, but public protests (no matter what the message) are the bedrock of our civil rights.
